Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Understanding, preventing, and managing one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults over 50

What is Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye condition affecting the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in people over 50 in developed countries.

There are two types of AMD:

Dry AMD

The most common form (85-90% of cases). Develops slowly as the macula thins with age. Drusen (yellow deposits) form under the retina.

Wet AMD

Less common but more severe. Abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina, leaking fluid and causing rapid vision loss. Requires urgent treatment.

Early Warning Signs

AMD often develops gradually and painlessly. Watch for these early warning signs:

Blurred or fuzzy central vision
Difficulty recognizing faces
Need for brighter light when reading
Trouble adapting to low light levels
Straight lines appear wavy or distorted
A blurry spot or dark area in center of vision

Important: If you notice any sudden changes in your vision, seek immediate eye care. Early detection is crucial for preserving vision.
